Chapter 11

The call had been completely unexpected. When Corrections Officer Jack Tripe answered the unknown number, he hesitated. “Hello?” His tone, along with his bewilderment, seemed to echo through his apartment.

A husky male voice said, “Tripe, this is Alighieri’s keeper and I have a message for you.”

The wheels in Tripe’s head began to spin and lock into position. Now he knew who was calling. The mob king, Jimmy Dante’s intermediary. Dante Alighieri was Jimmy Dante’s favorite author, ergo why he used the name he did in the mob. Tripe never met the intermediary, nor did he care to. The less he knew of who he really was, the better off he’d be.

Realizing Jimmy Dante had a job for him, Tripe cleared his throat, and answered, “Yeah, what’s the message?”

“Since the bird has flown your coop, he’s been causing trouble. Alighieri wants you to meet that trouble when it arrives and eliminate it.”

Tripe knew who “the bird” referred to. It was one of Jimmy Dante’s drug dealers who was under Tripe’s guard supervision not that long ago, an Evan Michaels. But he didn’t know what the trouble was in the encrypted message.

“The trouble will be arriving. Can you be more specific?” He fished for further clues.

“He’ll be coming in the day after tomorrow.”

“Oh, I see,” he murmured. The trouble was a he, and he was arriving at the correctional institute Tripe worked at the day after tomorrow. Whoever the man was, Jimmy Dante had just ordered a hit on him.

“Understood. I’ll keep a look out for that trouble and eliminate it the first chance I get.”

The intermediary didn’t say “good,” or “all right.” The only response Tripe got was the line going dead.

He harrumphed as he placed his phone back on its cradle. So Evan Michaels had stirred up trouble since he left prison six months ago. That didn’t surprise Tripe. He knew it was a matter of time before Michaels did something else wrong.

He rubbed his hands together fervidly, wondering who this man was he’d meet in two days and just how he was connected to Evan Michaels and to Jimmy Dante.
